Crop with Preview on Mac
- 1Open the image in Preview. If it opens in another app, right-click the file, choose Open With, then choose Preview.
- 2Click and drag on the image to select the area you want to keep.
- 3Choose Tools, then Crop, or press Command + K.
- 4Choose File, then Save to replace the file, or Export if you want a new copy or a different format.

- 2Click Edit, then choose Crop in the toolbar.
- 3Drag the corners or choose a preset aspect ratio from the sidebar.

Helpful cropping tips for Mac users
Save a copy before destructive edits in Preview if the original file matters. Use Export when you want to keep both the original and cropped version.
For profile photos, start with the Square 1:1 preset. For YouTube thumbnails, use 16:9. For vertical social posts, use 9:16.
If you are preparing web images, crop first, then resize and compress. This avoids spending file size on pixels you will remove anyway.
